Do I Really Need to Dig Deeper to Change?

You come across my blog and something catches your eye. You stay to read… and then there it is again.
Look a little deeper.
Not again. I’ve already gone there.
Or maybe…No way I’m not reliving that.
It would be like opening a can of worms.
Or maybe… there’s nothing to dig.
What’s happened is in the past dead and gone.
It’s irrelevant to my life now.
And then there’s…
What’s the point?
I can’t change the past.
I just want to get on with my life…
leave it where it belongs.
And honestly… I get it.
When I say “look a little deeper”…
I don’t mean analysing everything or digging things up for the sake of it.
I mean those moments where something doesn’t quite make sense…and instead of brushing it off you pause and think,
“I wonder why I do that…”
Because there are often reasons behind how we behave think and feel…even if we’re not fully aware of them.
Trying to force change can lead to short-term results that don’t last. You might be doing the “right” thing but inside it feels forced… like effort like willpower.
And over time you often find yourself slipping back into old patterns.
This isn’t just about behaviour… it’s about how you think and feel too.
So change isn’t simply about doing something different. There’s something underneath it… and that’s what needs understanding.
Even if you can’t recall the reason it doesn’t mean there isn’t one.
Much of what drives us sits outside of our conscious awareness. Experiences shape beliefs… and those beliefs influence how you respond and how you live.
So on the surface things might not make sense…
but underneath there is usually a reason.
For some people that awareness is already there… or at least a sense of it.
For others there’s very little awareness at all.
There’s a certain amount you can explore on your own…
and that’s why I write these blogs.
But in truth it’s not always easy.
We get caught up in life in our fears and in our own blocks…
and sometimes we just don’t see it clearly.
That’s where support can help.
If you’ve tried to change your behaviour… why hasn’t it lasted?
Because part of you wants change… the thinking part of you.
But another part of you your body doesn’t feel ready.
Your body is wired for survival.
So if you’ve experienced something difficult in the past whether it felt big or small at the time those experiences don’t just disappear.
They’re held… in your body in your beliefs… and they continue to influence how you respond.
So when something in the present connects to that past experience it can trigger the same feelings and reactions.
And those reactions… however frustrating they feel now… once helped you get through it.
Looking deeper means going where you need to go…where events have shaped your behaviour and led you to where you are today.
No judgement… it helped you get by.
But the situation has passed…
and the body doesn’t always know that.
You can only go so far on your own.
Maybe you’ve tried to shift things by yourself…
or perhaps you’ve reached out for support and things have moved…
but not in the way you’d hoped.
And here you are…
wondering if it’s even possible to really change.
Which brings you back again to…
what’s the point of digging deeper?
Sometimes… it comes down to timing.
There may be times when you’re not ready…
and other times when something in you begins to feel more open.
Perhaps now is the time to go a little deeper…
or to reach out for support.
And I know that in itself can feel confusing.
There are so many different approaches…
different ways of working…
it’s not always clear what’s right for you.
I can only speak for me… and where I’m at.
I want to help you develop your own skillset…
your own awareness…
your own tools.
Including learning tapping so you have something practical you can use to support yourself.
So over time you’re not relying on me…
but building something you can carry with you.
And where needed… gently working with the parts of you that have been shaped by past experiences…
so they no longer need to hold the same weight or drive the same responses.
We don’t go too deep too quickly or unnecessarily.
It’s always at a pace that feels safe.
Often it’s not about going back through everything.
Sometimes far less is needed than you might think.
It can be a bit like being afraid of a monster under the bed.
Together we gently look…
and often find it’s not a monster at all.
Just fear.
Just the fear of something being there…
and then realising there’s nothing under the bed.
And the truth is… we don’t always know what we’ll find.
But you don’t have to do it alone.
There are ways to move through it… gently…
and tools you can learn to support yourself along the way.
You don’t have to do all of this with someone else.
There’s a lot you can begin to notice and understand on your own…
and sometimes that’s enough to start shifting things.
But if you find yourself going round in the same patterns or feeling stuck, that’s often where having the right support can make a difference.
So is it really worth looking deeper?
Maybe it’s not about forcing yourself to go there…
but about beginning to understand what’s already there.
And from that place…
things can start to shift…often more gently than you expect.
If this resonated you’re welcome to subscribe. I share reflections like this regularly so if you’ve ever found yourself thinking “I wonder why I do that…” you’re in the right place.
