Finding Myself Later in Life: Why It’s Never Too Late to Change

"I lost myself. And then I found a way back."
"I lost myself. And then I found a way back."

About 10 years ago, I left work one summer evening and felt completely overwhelmed. Something had happened that day that shook me—a difficult experience that left me confused, unsettled, and questioning myself.

As I stepped outside into the warm light, my thoughts spiralled:

Who am I?

What do I really think?

Is this even my life?

I couldn’t breathe properly. My chest felt tight. I felt hollow.

That moment marked something I hadn’t seen coming:I had merged with everyone else. There was no me left—just roles, reactions, and responsibilities.

I had spent so long adapting, softening, overfunctioning…...so long making sure everyone else was okay…...that I hadn’t noticed how far I’d drifted from myself.

And I knew I couldn’t carry on like that.

The Journey Back to Me

Two weeks later, I began counselling as part of my training to become a therapist. It was confronting, slow, and at times uncomfortable. But it was also the beginning of everything.

I had grown so used to focusing on others that it felt strange sitting in a space just for me. There were no roles to play. No peace to keep. No one to manage.

Gradually, I began to notice myself again—the quiet parts, the uncertain parts, the hidden parts. I saw how much I had silenced myself to be easy to like, agreeable, and calm. But those patterns were quietly costing me my sense of identity.

Counselling gave me something I hadn’t had before: Space to feel. Space to understand. Space to be.

I didn’t leave “healed”—but I left with a stronger foundation. I was no longer lost. I was learning how to come home to myself.

Then I Found EFT

Later, during my counselling training, I came across EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques). And I was honestly blown away.

EFT worked in a way I hadn’t experienced before. It gently got to the root of emotional patterns and helped shift them—not by pushing, but by listening and responding to the body and mind together.

While counselling had helped me understand my story, EFT helped me release the emotional charge around it.

Since then, EFT has become a natural extension of my work. I continue to use it for my own growth, and I’ve seen how powerful it can be for clients too—especially those who have spent a lifetime holding everything in.

A New Beginning, Even Now

It’s easy to believe that change needs to happen earlier in life. That healing should have started years ago. That we’ve “missed our chance.”

But I’m here to tell you, with full sincerity: It’s not too late.

You can begin again in your 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond. What matters isn’t how long you’ve been lost—but that you choose to come back to yourself now.

It may not be easy. It may take time. But it’s possible.

And the freedom that comes from reconnecting to who you truly are? That’s worth everything.
